Preschool Ministry

On Sunday, I meet two little girls, twins, that were first time visitors to our church.  They were visiting with a family that regularly attends our church, so I knew the lady who brought them to the room.  As she was introducing them to me, she said, “This is the first time they have ever been to church, EVER!”  Wow!  What a joy and responsibility I felt to be a part of the team that would help shape their very first memories of church.  They were only 3 yrs old, but I knew what they experienced in that hour, whatever the emotion, would stick with them for a lifetime!

PreschoolI’m happy to report the girls had a wonderful experience!  From the Bible presentation, they learned that God made the world because He loves them, but they also learned that church is an exciting, safe, cheery place, where strangers truly care about you!

What is your Preschool Ministry saying to your little ones?   Do you have an exciting Bible presentation geared just for them?  Are volunteers excited to be there and ready to greet them with a smile?  Would you like some help making changes?

Special Needs Ministry

Saturday I attended the Disability Resource Conference at Valley EV Free Church in West Des Moines, Iowa. The conference was laid out with two different tracks, a Volunteer Session and a Family Session. They also had an excellent keynote speaker (Larry W. Patton - www.HurdlingHandicaps.org) and various resource tables staffed with leaders and volunteers giving out information on services for disabled people. The conference was great and I urge you to attend this one next year or one similar in your area.

The conference gave me valuable insight about removing barriers to these wonderful people, and ways to more fully engage them in Bible presentations. The information that most impacted me (ok, pretty much blew me away) were the stats:

  • 1 in 5 Americans have some type of disability (=54 million)
  • 30% of the families in the United States have a member with a disability
  • 1:150 births in the United States have a form of Autism

But...
Only 2% of the disabled people in the US are plugged into an evangelical church

Which may be the reason why...
80% of marriages of parents with a disabled child, end in divorce

These families really need the church, but so many of them are not coming. So what can we as children's ministers do? The same thing Jesus did - when He came upon people with needs, He reached out, met their needs and ministered to them! You can reach out by offering programs for community Special Needs kids and their families. You can meet their needs by searching for any barriers that are keeping people with Special Needs from your church. You can minister to them by working to create an attitude of acceptance with your current children and parents. Then as children with Special Needs come, they can feel loved as they learn about God's love.

Environment Assignment

Today's families are concerned about their children's environments, and church is no exception. As people who minister to children, we also want to look out for the children in our church, but many times, we don't notice what's right in front of us. This is because over time, we operate on 'auto-pilot' and we loose our fresh perspective.

Ready for an assignment?! Recycle

Walk through your children's ministry environments...with a mission in mind! Use your senses and ask yourself: How does it look, sound, and yes, even smell?!

Start with the nursery. Are happy sounds coming from the room(s)? Do the toys look clean and in good shape? Do you smell diapers? Do you see any safety hazards? If you were a parent leaving your baby for the first time, would you feel comfortable, or would you be worried about something...like old toys with lead paint?

Next, take at look at the other children's environments. Do they scream; "We value children!" or "We need to vacuum the corners!"? Are wall hangings outdated or damaged? Are the ceiling tiles damaged or stained? Does it smell musty? Do you have engaging activities ready when children arrive, or does it look like just another day at school?

Now make a list of what you see and share them with a team of people who will work with you to 'get-er-done'!
